Science Matters

The word SCIENCE comes from a Latin word that means "knowledge."

Science is defined as system of studying, testing, and experimenting on things in nature. Science is a search for general laws about how the world works. Physics, biology, and chemistry, are types of science.

For starters look up what Physics, Biology and Chemistry are the studies of, go to:

Physics: http://m-w.com/dictionary/Physics
Biology: http://m-w.com/dictionary/Biology
Chemistry: http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/Chemistry

Answer the following questions
:
1] Which of these three studies of science sounds the most interesting? Why?
2] Can you think of any other types of science that people study?

The activities that follow will give you a look into some of the things you can learn in these fields of science. To begin, we are going to work on a set of science problems together and then work on some interactive games that will help you learn valuable science concepts. SO let’s go to the Louisiana PASS (LA PASS) website where we can find, investigate and solve all kinds of science problems. Let’s click on the following link:

http://www.louisianapass.org/index.php

NOW, on the main page of the Louisiana PASS website (click the link above if you haven’t already!!) you have two options, you are either a registered user already (?), and if that’s the case log yourself in, OR if this is your first time using Louisiana PASS then you will have to sign your self up, and if this is the case, then go ahead and register yourself so we can move along!

(REMEMBER: if you are new to Louisiana PASS and you just registered make sure you write down your “login-in name” and “password” so you don’t forget and we can keep track of our progress during future visits!!!)

If you have successfully logged in, select the “PASS Practice Tests,” then click on Level “Grade 8,” and finally press the “Science” tab to bring up the quizzes in the Information Station!

NOTE: For those of you in 6th and 7th grade make sure you are working with a college mentor on this activity.

Ready!??!
