UC Links at Riverside

In the Riverside area there are two UC Links sites during the 2004-2005 academic year.  Approximately 250 children and 60 undergraduates work together on a variety of after-school learning activities during this period. UC Links principal investigator at UC Riverside is Sharon Duffy (Education).  The UC Links sites are:

Eastside Cybrary Connection and the Nicholls Park CybraryLocated in Riverside. A collaboration of the Riverside Public Library, the Graduate School of Education and the Department of Psychology, UC Riverside. 

Eastside Cybrary Connection:

These sites provide children and youth with public library resources in their neighborhoods. In addition, participants also collaborate with UC Riverside undergraduates in the exploration of educational software, homework and other literacy and research activities.

Goals

 

  • Increase computer, information, math and basic literacy skills for participating youth
  • Increase knowledge and improve attitudes and aspirations toward higher learning for participating youth
  • Development of appropriate social skills for participating youth


Evaluation Strategies

 

  • Weekly field notes and reflection papers submitted by undergraduates
  • Attendance and demographic data on children who attend Cybrary
  • Parent survey of reasons children attend survey and perceived benefits of participation (planned)

  • Provide undergraduates with an opportunity to explore the possibility of teaching as a career, especially in under-resourced schools
  • Provide undergraduates with experience working with children of different ages and cultural backgrounds

  • Local adaptation of standard UC Links undergraduate pre-test/post-test survey
  • Analysis of undergraduate field notes and course assignments to document changes in conceptual understanding
