Vol. 1, No. 1 | Spring 2002 |
A preliminary design by Y-PLAN youth for redevelopment of a transit village near McClymonds High School in Oakland. SITE NOTES The Y-PLAN The Y-PLAN (YouthPlan, Learn, Act Now) is a collaborative effort that connects UC Berkeley with communities in Oakland and Alameda. Undergraduates and graduate students work with high school students on local planning projects, teaching and learning principles of urban planning and design in the process. University and high school students collaborate through in-class activities (at McClymonds High School in Oakland and the Bay Area School of Enterprise in Alameda) and through an email mentorship program. Professor Harrison Fraker (College of Environmental Design) is the principal investigator, and Deborah McKoy (UC Berkeley Interactive University) is the project director. The program, which began in 1993, received UC Links funding for the 2001-2002 academic year. This spring, high school and university students are working on two community development projects. McClymonds High School students are researching and drawing plans for the redevelopment of a transit village near their school, and Bay Area School of Enterprise students are planning a community garden in Alameda. Students use a range of technology resources to develop their projects, including geographic information systems (GIS) technology, the Internet, and PowerPoint. On May 2, 2002, youth and their UC Berkeley mentors will give presentations at Oakland City Hall to a jury of professionals and policymakers. | ||||||
